COPYRIGHTS AND CONTRACT INFORMATION

Serial Artists
Midnight Ink will be published bi-monthly, so you will either need to draw and ink a complete episode within a two month period or save up your episodes so that you don't have to rush to meet a deadline. If you do decide to send samples for a serial story, keep in mind that the detail in your samples might also be expected by the writer you're paired up with. Remember that these stories must have 2 or more episodes. Don't send detailed samples if you can't produce several similarly detailed episodes. Only send samples of the styles that you can consistently repeat.

Feature Artists
Feature stories have only one episode, so the detail of the artwork in your sample(s) can be as complicated as you want to make it. You still have to remember not to send in samples of something that you are not willing to draw for this book ( don't send samples that took you days to create if you don't want to spend that same amount of time on the story you and a writer intend to submit). Also, feature stories are between 5 and 15 pages long.

Filler Artists
You might end up writing a story for yourself since filler stories can be as short as a comic strip. They can be several strips revolving around one plot or theme, or they can be simple one-pagers. We prefer actual short stories to little comic strips, but we will not deny the latter. If you're paired up with a writer, be prepared to do at least one full page of artwork, even though it might not be necessary. We do not accept one-cell strips.

RECOMMENDATIONS

MIDNIGHT INK will be printed in Black & White/Grayscale, so please don't send only color samples. You should show the writer that you can work within the limitations of the Black & White contrast.

When you find a story that you would like to illustrate, come up with ideas for general layouts to present to the writer. Which of your artistic styles would fit the story best? Not necessarily something definite, just something to help the writer visualize what you can add to their story. Be prepared to explain what formats you think might better illustrate the story.

It is absolutely NECESSARY to determine WHO makes final decisions regarding the artistic look of the story. If you decide to give the writer full control over the look of the format, characters, settings, etc. you SHOULD NOT change your mind after the story has been drawn. Realize your limits and be prepared to work harder to fit the writer's idea of what the story should look like.
